"My practice questions the possibility of the immediacy of gesture, the power of the mark-making process and of paint itself, in its ability to convey experience and meaning to the viewer in a world saturated by new media. I am conscious in this endeavour of the tension between pure abstraction and the purpose of the gesture 'the task of painting is defined as the attempt to render visible forces that are not themselves visible' (Deleuze). These experiences or 'forces' are manifested visually, initially through drawing, and a series of paintings evolve from these drawings. There is conflict between the materiality of paint itself, with its boundless physicality, and the constraints of intention: to evoke the force and sensation of experience".
